Nissan X-Trail SUV gears up to come back to India. Here’s what to expect

Posted on 26/06/2024

Despite its significant presence in the international market, Nissan X-Trail has struggled to find success in India. The circumstances for the Japanese car company became so difficult that it had to stop selling the Nissan Kicks SUV in India in April 2023, even though it is a well-liked model in many countries around the world. Currently, the only vehicle available from Nissan in India is the Magnite SUV. In reality, the Nissan Magnite is the only model that allows the company to continue operating in the country. Nonetheless, Nissan is preparing to introduce a new model in India in the near future.

Nissan is gearing up to introduce the latest version of the X-Trail SUV in India in the near future. The car manufacturer has already extended invitations to media outlets across the nation to attend the reveal next month. This suggests that the Nissan X-Trail is set to hit the Indian market in either July or in a series of consecutive months.

When it launches, the Nissan X-Trail will be made available for purchase in India through the Completely Built Unit (CBU) method. This strategy is Nissan’s way of dipping its toes into the Indian market before deciding to begin local production or assembly of the SUV. Upon its arrival, this SUV will face competition from other brands like MG Gloster, Toyota Fortuner, Hyundai Tucson, Skoda Kodiaq, Volkswagen Tiguan, and more.

Here’s a brief and detailed overview of what to anticipate from the forthcoming Nissan X-Trail SUV.

Surprisingly, the Nissan X-Trail has been in the Indian market for quite some time. The manufacturer introduced the initial and second-generation models here, and the third-generation model was also displayed but never made it to the market. Nonetheless, the fourth-generation model of the SUV is set to be launched in India as a new model. Although it is available in international markets, the SUV has been undergoing testing in India for a while.

Developed on the renowned CMF-A architecture, created by the Renault-Nissan Alliance, this SUV is on the market in both five and seven-seat configurations across the world. It’s available in both gasoline and hybrid drivetrain models internationally. It’s understood that the SUV’s version for India will feature a 1.5-litre, three-cylinder turbocharged engine. This engine has the power to produce a peak output of 201 bhp and a maximum torque of 305 Nm.

Given the prevailing government policies against hybrid vehicles and Nissan’s strategy to use the CBU strategy for the X-Trail, it seems improbable that the hybrid drivetrain will be available in India. The SUV will likely come equipped with a CVT gearbox, but it’s yet to be announced whether it will include a 2WD option. The X-Trail might also offer all-wheel drive (AWD) as an option.
